Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is provided as a simple solution to improve your smile without picking up a drill. It is a safe and easy alternative to whiten your teeth than having veneers or crowns and is a common choice amongst patients. We offer home whitening kits as the results are more controlled and stable compared to whitening in the dental chair.

FAQs

What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surfaces or damaging it. Usually, the original shade of the tooth is whitened to a lighter colour.

What does it involve?
The most common type of whitening is called ‘dentist-supervised home whitening’. You will have trays made specially to fit into your mouth like gum-shields. The whitening gel is then put in the trays and you will be given a routine to follow at home.

Why do my teeth discolour?
As we get older our teeth get darker. This is partly due to our getting older, but it is also caused by the foods we eat and drink, and by other habits such as smoking. Tea, coffee, blackcurrant juice, red wine and other foods that have strong colours can have an effect on the overall colour of our teeth.

How long does home whitening take?
The total length of the home bleaching treatment can vary depending on how discoloured your teeth are and the shade you want to get to. It can usually be finished within two to four weeks. Once your dentist has started the treatment, you will need to continue the treatment at home. This means regularly applying the whitening product over two to four weeks.

How much does it cost?
We provide Boutique Whitening Gels which come as 4 x 3ml syringes and only need to be worn for 30 minutes/ day. The Boutique Whitening system is £425 (includes Trays and gels).

We stock top-up syringes at £20 each and a 4 Pack of Boutique Whitening gels at £70.

Will I be happy with the results?
Treatment results may vary depending on the original shade of the teeth. Darker teeth often show a bigger change than light ones. They will tend to darken slightly, eventually. The research shows the effect lasts for around three years, although sometimes it can last longer. They can always be topped up with the syringe packs. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth.

What are the side effects?
Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others may have discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.

What about home kits?
Over-the-counter kits are not recommended as they contain only a small concentration of hydrogen peroxide, which is less effective. Some are also acidic, whilst others are abrasive. Whitening is a complicated treatment procedure and should only be carried out by a dentist after a thorough examination and assessment of your teeth. It is very important to follow the instructions issued by your dentist and to ensure that you attend any follow-up appointments recommended. Products bought from Internet sites are not always what they appear to be and can be harmful.

When might it not work?
Whitening can only lighten your existing tooth colour. It will not work on any type of ‘false’ teeth. This includes dentures, crowns, veneers and fillings. These may need to be replaced to match.

Can I have unlimited top ups?
Legally, a course of whitening cannot be open- ended. After a period of 1 year, your trays need to be checked by a dentist. This is easy to do at a routine examination. A dental receptionist cannot supply whitening gels without a dentist’s approval.
